Department of Biological Resources

The keywords for the 21st century are “food,” “resources,” “environment,” and “region.” The various “strengths” of living things must be put into effect in order to secure the resources needed to support the ever-increasing human population, while protecting the limited environment of this earth. Agriculture is the field of study that will lead the way in the 21st century through systematic, comprehensive research on these critical issues.

With a history of more than 100 years, the Ehime University Faculty of Agriculture seeks to solve the various problems related to food, resources, and the environment and to create a recycling-oriented society that harmonizes humans and nature. Its goal is to train individuals who, on the basis of a thorough understanding of the phenomena of nature and the concept of circularity (recycling), have acquired a high level of specialized knowledge and skill in areas such as the development and dissemination of biological production technologies, use and management of biological resources, and the conservation and creation of environments, and can contribute to the creation of a recycling-oriented society that harmonizes people and nature.

Affiliated Facilities

University Farm

The mission of the University Farm is to provide practical education to students through production management activities in actual farming and to develop techniques that can be put to use in agricultural production.
In addition, the Farm endeavors to contribute to regional agriculture and the agriculture of developing countries through making research results achieved at the Farm open to the public.

University Forest

The Komenono Forest Research Center, located in the University Forest (18 km northeast of the Faculty of Agriculture), consists of a research building that serves educational and research functions, as well as management of the University Forest, and a 384 ha experimental forest. At this facility, experimental research on the forest in various fields and practical education related to the science of forestry are carried out. Also, through classes open to the public and other activities, efforts are being made to return the results of education and research carried out by the university to local society.

Institute of Agricultural Environment Control

This facility conducts research toward the realization of plant factories that will produce superior quality food safely and with reduced labor.
Specifically, this includes applied research on the rapidly developing information technology that is attracting great attention at present, in other words, research on intelligent, labor-saving methods of environment control, compilation of a plant physiology information database, development of intelligent robots, and optimization of post-harvest processes. In addition, the Institute publishes the results of research on various subjects such as the use of plants as amenities.
There is also practical training for acquiring basic techniques in these areas.

Center of Advanced Technology for the Environment

Since around 1970 the Faculty of Agriculture has been engaged in surveys and research in environmental metrology and has reached world level in this field. The Center aims to contribute to the improvement of social systems through the application of these advanced environmental technologies and, in the area of survey, analysis, and evaluation of environmental chemicals, to carry out environmental surveys and metrology, analysis, research, and development. In addition, students are educated in the research field of advanced environmental technology. Through a systematic transfer of this technology to the public and to people of other countries, the Center hopes to contribute to the improvement of the educational and research functions of the university and its role in society.
