Shikoku has developed wide-ranging agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, making use of the island's complex topography, with horticulture, vegetables, flowers, and fruits such as citrus produced indoors and outdoors and aquaculture in the sea and along the coast, along with forestry and livestock production. This course carries out education and research with the aim of developing basic research and applied technology in plant and animal production and their management.

The processing, storage, and effective use of agricultural products are becoming important sectors in the nation's economy. They are also a way of responding to the various demands of society regarding agricultural products. There is also a great need for basic education and research to develop new biochemical engineering technologies, and this course employs research methods that form the basis of these and carries out applied research that makes use of them.

Population increase and consumption of resources have reached unprecedented levels, and the finiteness of the earth and limits of human existence and activity have become common knowledge. The conservation and rational use of the environment that forms the basis of bioresource production and of human life is a major new task assigned to agricultural science.
