This major has been created to expand education and research by linking the sciences that take atoms and molecules as their subject, the life sciences, and environmental science, at times taking them as an integrated field. The results of this linkage are reflected in solutions to many contemporary problems. The major consists of two courses – Molecular Science, Biology and Environmental Science − both of which collaborate in carrying out education and research in a complex field that assumes a new viewpoint.

The 21st century is said to be a century of natural disasters. In particular, many natural disasters occur in Asia, and every year many lives are lost. Thus clarifying the mechanisms of the occurrence of natural disasters and various way of managing them are urgent tasks. In this course students can study the mechanisms behind earthquake and climate-related disasters, measures for disaster damage reduction , disaster management, disaster management informatics, and so on. The Course conducts research on the management of earthquake, landslide, and flood disasters in Asia, in particular, and aims to produce disaster management engineers and researchers who will work in Asian countries where many disasters occur.
