Preparing to Come Living Expreses

It is much cheaper to live in Matsuyama than in larger cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. The rent for a single apartment with bath and toilet is from 20,000 yen to 35,000 yen. Electricity, gas and water come to about 8,000~10,000 yen a month. Matsuyama is flat and easy to get around on bicycle, so there is no need to pay for transportation. Food will come to around 35,000 to 50,000 yen. Cell phone bills come to about 5000 yen. So it is possible to live on 80,000~100,000 yen a month. However, this does not allow much for travel or the purchase of expensive items such as computers.

If you are a full time student then the AINECS organization will pay for liability insurance for part of your housing insurance. AINECS also provides 30,000yen for ‘settling in' to students who are new to Matsuyama, do not receive a scholarship and who did not get into university housing.

The benefit of coming to Ehime University is that a local volunteer group called CAS, provides used electrical appliances and household goods to students for free. This is a way to help the students and the environment by recycling. Bicycles are also provided. They cannot promise that you can get everything you need to set up housekeeping, but it can help. Transport of these things is also provided, but a small charge is taken for gas.
