The university has one dormitory for international students, International House, which has 30 single rooms and 4 family apartments. The Takusui-ryo dormitory just south of the Faculty of Agriculture is for men only and 10 rooms are allotted to international students. In the future the Miyuki Dormitory will be remodeled and rooms will be made available to international students as well.
The International House is for students who have just arrived and they can stay up to one year. That gives them time to adjust and save a little money to look for their own apartment. It is also a good chance to make friends with the other dorm students. It is a 30+ minute bicycle ride to the Johoku campus.
Some students apply for prefectural or municipal housing, but they are run on a kind of lottery system, so you can not depend on getting an apartment.
There are several apartment owners who rent rooms at lower rates to international students. Please check at the Student Exchange Team office for some suggestions.
Generally speaking there is nothing in an apartment when you move in. You will need to provide the furniture, appliances, such as washing machine and refrigerator, and even the ceiling lights. You will also be expected to remove everything when you move out.
You can get many necessary things at the Shirikiriya Storehouse. This is a volunteer activity that provides used household goods to international students for free.
