There is no university housing available for visiting reseachers.
There are many apartments available near all campuses. Please ask someone in your faculty to help find a place. Most places charge two month's rent for key money and the real estate agent also receives one month's rent. Some of the key money will be returned to you when you leave if there are no repairs to be made. If there are tatami mats (a woven straw mat used in traditional Japanese rooms), you will be charged to have them recovered when you leave. A separate, room cleaning fee might also be taken out. Rent can range from 40,000 to 80,000 yen a month in Matsuyama.
Japanese apartments and houses, as a rule, are not furnished. You must provide the lights, appliances such as a washing machine and refrigerator and all furniture. You are expected to remove all of these things when you move out. Recently, however, there are some companies which provide furnished apartments. Some sights can be viewed on line. If you do not speak Japanese, is it recommended that you have someone help you who does.
