Aidai students from 4 faculties lived for 10 days in two villages near Yogyakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia. They joined Gadjah Mada University (UGM) students who had already been living in the villages for one month as part of the KKN Program sponsored by UGM. The purpose of the KKN program is for students to design projects which they can implement with the villagers to improve village life and empower the villagers and themselves.
The Aidai students first attended a Youth Forum, part of the 3rd GEN (UGM/Ehime University Network) Seminar, held in Bali, and then went to Yogyakarta, where they had a one-day orientation. The 10 participating students divided into two groups of 5 and stayed in two separate villages. Group A stayed in Playen, in the hills southeast of Yogyakarta, where some of the projects centered on the use of coconuts to make sugar and other products. Group B was in Sentolo, south of Yogyakarta, where folk crafts were being developed to sell abroad. The Aidai students had planned their own projects on waste management, but found that, due to a lack of information about the villages, they were not able to carry them out as planned. So they also gathered information to help prepare students who will participate in this program next year.
Communication was difficult at times, but using English, Indonesian, Java and gestures, the Aidai students were able to form strong relationships with the UGM students and the villagers. Many tears were shed when they had to leave.
This program was funded in part by the Ehime University Kokusai GP and was led by Ruth Vergin (Institute for International Relations) and Hiroyiuki Yoshitomi (Aidai Museum, Faculty of Agriculture). At UGM, Prof. Md. Affan Fajar Falah of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, a graduate of the Ehime University United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, was in charge of the program.
