Introduction -------------------------------------

Malaria is a deadly disease caused by infection with protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium that are transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.  It remains one of the leading causes of both morbidity and mortality among populations residing in tropical and subtropical countries.  More than 1 million people die yearly from malaria.  In recent years, the rapid increase in multiple drug-resistant falciparum malaria has been a major hindrance to disease control.  Thus, the main focus of malaria research is now on vaccine development.  The completion of the reference genome of Plasmodium falciparum leads to the need for high-throughput proteomics to identify novel vaccine as well as drug/diagnostic targets in the genome.  We are currently applying the wheat germ cell-free protein expression system to the genes putatively functioning in merozoites, sporozoites, or gametocytes.
