Monami Akita awarded the Best Student Presentation Award at an international symposium
Monami Akita was awarded the Best Student Presentation Award for her outstanding presentation at an international symposium held at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (22–24 September, 2017).

Her presentation was “the biochemical characteristics of type I collagen of seven fish species from various habitat temperatures and its role in adaptation to water temperature”. In future research, she would like to connect biochemical characteristics to structural characteristics in collagen of deep sea fish in a low water temperature and high hydrostatic pressure habitat.
Her goal is to develop useful material that exploits the characteristics of deep sea fish collagen. It is an interesting area of research that has been used in many areas such as regenerative medicine, food, and cosmetic products. We expect big success from her.

(Comment from Monami Akita)

Hello, I’m Monami Akita. I live in Kochi but I’m from Wakayama. I enrolled in The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University this April, where my research is on collagen protein of fish species and texture at the Applied Aquaculture Laboratory.
First of all, I would like to show my appreciation to professors Kohsuke ADACHI and Katsuji MORIOKA and my fellow researchers in the laboratory who have given me all the support I need. I would also like to thank my boss and co-workers.
In my research, I focused on three points, the habitat water temperature of the fish species, the denaturation temperature of collagen, and the amino acid composition of collagen, and determined the mutual relationship between those three. The symposium was a fruitful time for me because I could exchange ideas and views with more than 12 professors in a two-hour session. I would like to enhance my research using the knowledge I gained.
