I was a student at Paris university for 7 years. The reason why it looks shorter than usual in Japan (9 years for bachelor, master and doctor courses) is that I joined the university as a 3rd year student: after graduating high school, I attended a Higher School Preparatory Class (グランゼコール準備級), which consist of 2 years of intensive cram school with the main goal of training students for enrolment in one of the “Grandes Écoles”(グランゼコール), which are the top French institution of higher education. The workload in HSPC was really hard, it is one of the highest in Europe (29 to 45 contact hours a week), and competition between students, to get top rankings, really intense, sometime cruel. After 2 years, I was exhausted and decided to go to the university. Since my scores were acceptable, the university allowed me to join from the 3rd year.
My time at the university was exactly opposite as Higher School Preparatory Class (グランゼコール準備級). I found a friendly environment among teachers and students. I made many friends and together we emulated each other into studying more to reach our goals. At university, I discovered that studying is not only about getting a high score but also finding what is your center of interest in life. After graduating my master in physics, I decided that I wanted to become a researcher but the subjects proposed by my teachers were either too difficult or did not match with my interest.
I decided not to go into that research field, but to return to study and after a year I obtained a second master degree in material sciences, where I investigated the transformation of materials under high pressure and high temperature. This additional 1 year was not wasted time, it helped me to find what I really wanted to study as a researcher. After graduating my PhD, I moved to Japan, and joined the Geodynamics Research Center in Ehime University, which is one of the top institutes in the world for the study of materials under high-pressure and where I am still working, doing research on what I really like.
My message here to high school students is that in life there is nothing decided upon you. It is up to you to decide what you want to do with your life and university is there to give you the knowledge, insight and wisdom to find it. If you have a goal and do everything that is within your capabilities to reach it, then you can definitely be successful in your life.
