On July 22, 2019, Prof. David Elvis Leeming, Recruitment and Resources Manager and Employer Engagement Lead, The School of Language and Global Studies, University of Central Lancashire, England, was invited to give a lecture about “Intercultural Communication”.

Before the lecture, Prof. Leeming visited the Institute of International Relations to meet with Prof. Manabu Sumida, Special Aide to the President of Ehime University, to exchange views on the possibility of future exchange toward the conclusion of an MOU between the two universities. Prof. Leeming, having a background of working as a JET (The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) teacher in Matsuyama 20 years ago, showed a special interest in promoting student exchanges with universities in Ehime.

The lecture on “Intercultural Communication” was delivered in English and attended by around 30 people including students, faculty and staff. Prof. Leeming touched upon his own experience of jumping into Japanese culture and his talk evolved to the subject of where stereotypes come from and how we can benefit from them.

At the end of his lecture, Prof. Leeming introduced the University of Central Lancashire, especially his school, the School of Language and Global Studies. He mentioned that it offers 29 languages to choose from to learn and has well-equipped student accommodation and facilities.
