On 19th Feb, Mr. Shintaro NAKAYAMA from OUI Inc. and their local partner, Dr. Khumbo KALUA, ophthalmologist from Republic of Malawi visited Ehime University. Together with them we discussed the possibility of our future collaboration to promote “Smart Eye Camera (SEC)”, which improves efficiency and quality of eye diagnosis in developing countries with scarce ophthalmologists, in Malawi and Mozambique
OUI Inc. is a Japanese medical startup founded by 3 ophthalmologists from Keio University. They developed “Smart Eye Camera (SEC)”, a smartphone-attachment medical device to diagnose condition of anterior part of the eye. With SEC we can easily take, send and share images of the condition of anterior part of the eye, to diagnose various eye diseases including cataract. SEC can make it possible to diagnose patients living in the area with absence of medical doctors, by sending the image to ophthalmologists in distant locations. SEC will be very useful to improve the situation of eye health of African countries, where a large number of people are suffering from cataract.
OUI Inc. has undertaken field tests in Vietnam and Malawi to explore how to install SEC and remote-diagnosis system related with SEC in the actual field of developing countries.
Together with Ms. Veronica Americo Antonio Fernando, Lecturer of the department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Science in Lúrio University and currently studying in Graduate School of Agriculture, Ehime University, we discussed the possibility of undertaking pilot installment of SEC in Mozambique in collaboration with our partner, Lúrio University in Mozambique.
Dr. KALUA and Mr. NAKAYAMA also had a courtesy meeting with President OHASHI. In the meeting, we confirmed the continuous discussion for our collaboration in Mozambique and Malawi. We also confirmed our hope that this collaboration would be the first step to make further impact to contribute to the whole Mozambique and even to the whole Africa!!
