Ehime Prefecture is proud to be number one in fish farming production sales. However in recent years, the value of farmed fish is under a dark cloud and the problem of the aging population of the people working in fisheries and the lack of young people to take their places has caused production to fall and there is a strong demand for the development of higher quality of marine production technology and for increasing the number of people to carry on. In this context, the local community has great expectations for the marine production research at Ehime University. In response, Ehime University has actively worked to carry out surveys of the fish market environment, develop fishery technology, offer lectures and provide education to the fishermen. For this purpose Ehime University has established the South Ehime Fisheries Research Center on the principles of Biological Life, Environment and the Community.
The Center is located in Ainan Town in the southern part of Ehime Prefecture. It is the only education/research facility of the university which is located off campus. The facility itself is on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Nishiumi annex of the Ainan Town office and with the generous cooperation from Ainan Town it has been provided with state-of -the-art equipment and facilities. The is also a branch office located in the Faculty of Agriculture on the Tarumi Campus.
This new Center was opened in April, 2008 as part of the implementation of an agreement between Ehime Prefecture and the Southern Ehime region. The research activities are in the three areas of Life Science, Environmental Science and Sociology with nine research projects.
